My job sees me coordinating any bilateral incoming and outgoing visits by the trade minister or the prime minister, and preparing the briefing material for their respective visits. Memorable Moment As I am writing this piece, I am on assignment preparing for and working during the G7 summit in Charlevoix. I also worked on its subsequent ratification in the European Parliament. It was both stressful and rewarding to work on this priority file for the government.
Initiative To Celebrate I would argue that, for Canada, this has been a great year for free trade. Words Of Wisdom I would say take pieces of advice from others with a grain of salt. Except for this one: I have been privileged to work with some of the best and brightest, from whom I have learned a great deal. These colleagues are diplomats with incredibly diverse experiences and I have always appreciated hearing the stories of how they started their careers.

Abstract Purpose Sexual-assault crimes, primarily perpetrated by males against female victims, impose a substantial burden on societies worldwide, especially on youth. Given that approximately half of all sexual assaults involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator or victim, it is reasonable to expect that minimum legal drinking age MLDA restrictions might have an effect on sexual-assault patterns.
The present study assesses whether MLDA laws might have an impact on sexual-assault crimes. Uniform Crime Reporting data does not include an explicit alcohol involvement indicator. Results Nationally, in comparison to males slightly younger than the MLDA, those just older had significant and immediate increases in sexual-assault perpetration of For females, there was no evidence of MLDA effects on sexual-assault crimes. Conclusions Release from Canadian MLDA law restrictions was strongly associated with increases in sexual-assault perpetration by young men.
These findings lend support to the potential effectiveness of population-level alcohol control policies for sexual-assault prevention among youth. Previous article in issue.

History[ edit ] In Roman law the father of the extended household, the pater familias , exercised autocratic authority through patria potestas over his extended family, including his wife, his children and his slaves. Such rights persisted through feudal and English common law , assigning most people the status of personal property chattel. In common law, emancipation is the freeing of someone from this control. It grants the emancipated the ability to legally engage in civil actions, and frees the former owner of liability.
In common-law jurisdictions, chattel slavery was abolished during the 19th century and married women were given independent rights during the 19th and at the start of the 20th century. Later during the 20th century, common law jurisdictions split over both children’s rights and youth rights ; in some, such as the USA, a traditional father’s control became a right to shared parental control and emancipation remained a remedy for mature minors, but in others, for example England, the idea of absolute control over minors has been repudiated; parent’s responsibilities are emphasised and children’s rights promoted.
In these jurisdictions, the rights of minors to act on their own behalf are granted on a case-by-case basis if a minor can show the capacity and maturity to handle them, and juvenile emancipation from control is deemed unnecessary. It isn’t as simple as all-or-nothing emancipation in some places and gradually acquired rights in others.
