Wanborough, The Manor and The Great Barn In the Cistercian monks from Waverley Abbey near Farnham built a great barn in which to store the annual harvest of arable crops and sheep fleeces from Wanborough manor which the order controlled. The Cistercian system of recruiting lay brothers, who were men lacking the education to become fully fledged monks but who wanted the discipline of religious life, enabled large farming operations to be run efficiently and dependably for the order under the supervision of a bailiff. The Abbey secured the right to hold an annual fair at Wanborough for three days from August 23rd and also provided for a piepowder court 1 to settle trading and other offences. The Great Barn was constructed from huge oak timbers, much of which is still in place today. The original external covering was made of vertical boarding although today this has been replaced with weatherboarding. The building has been extended in more recent times with work undertaken in and the early 19th century. Alongside the barn is a granary which was built at the end of the 18th century, although its original position was in the front of the manor house. The granary has been converted to provide toilet and kitchen facilities to the barn which can be hired for special functions.

As you can see on the top of the picture, he has pointed out where each little town is located. Michel Natal was a coal mining town that was located near Nelson in British Columbia. To be exact, it was three small towns, but they were so close to each other that it was really only one town. Though Michel Natal is what it is mostly called, the three towns were Michel, Middletown, and Natal, with Middletown obviously being located in the middle of the other two.

Michel was not even a kilometre away from Natal, hence why they were commonly referred to as simply, Michel Natal. Michel had a small population to start off, and consisted of a small hospital and a few houses.

The History of Surrey’s Museum and Archives An old muzzle loader found at Sullivan in , and a rusty six—shooter picked up on a hill south of Cloverdale were the nucleus around which the Surrey Museum’s collections evolved. Artifacts were picked up by municipal work crews and brought to Claude Harvie, Municipal Engineer, who even as a young man was interested in Surrey’s history.

These items were the beginning of the collection that eventually would form the basis of the Surrey Museum’s artifact collection. With the opening of the new Municipal Hall in Cloverdale in , all fairs and celebrations were held on the grounds next to the old Surrey Centre School located at th Street and 60th Avenue. The Town Hall was central to these celebrations. With the relocation and establishment of the fairgrounds in Cloverdale, the phenomenal success of the Cloverdale Rodeo, the improved oval, and the grand stands, the focus of community celebrations moved from Surrey Centre to Cloverdale.

The old hall had ceased to be the seat of local government and for a time was only used during the Fall Fair for storage and displays. With the growth in importance of Cloverdale and the expansion of the Fairgrounds, the old hall in Surrey Centre fell vacant. After the Municipal Government was moved to the new hall in , the old Town Hall was used by the Fall Fair Committee for storage and displays.
