Canada and sent to Louisiana!!!!!!!! It looks like a double cutaway les paul from hell. Mine has a nice tobacco sunburst, two humbuckers, mahogany with maple top, rosewood fretboard, crown inlays like a les standard, and two volume and two tone controls with a coil tap. The neck feels really comfortable to me, kind of fat, but fast. I used to own a McCarty Hollowbody with a wide-fat and this blows it away. It’s a cool era piece. The saddles were thrashed and I broke more than a few strings in a week, but this is a 25 year old guitar with the original hardware, so I can’t fault it for that. The nut is overcut on the low E and G causing buzzing. I used the toothpick trick to make sure it wasn’t the neck and it worked.

It was a DW. The store that I purchased it from had just received a shipment of them. I sorted through about 8 or 9 to find this one. You have to remember that they changed over from Korea in and these were the first ones out of the factory. I had orginally purchased a Dessert burst but I returned it because it had loose tuners and the bridge was at funny angle. I didn’t notice it when I picked it up but the loose tuners bothered me.

Orville and Orville by Gibson Guitars Named after the founding father of Gibson guitars, Orville H. Gibson, these fully-authorized Japanese guitars came into existence through partnerships between Gibson USA and various Japanese manufacturers and dealers such as Aria, Matsumoku and Yamano Music that extend back into the s. It wasn’t until when Yamano Gakki took over the distribution of Gibson and Korean-made Epiphone guitars in Japan, and later in , decided to expand their lineup of guitar models, that things really got rolling for the Orville and Orville by Gibson brands.

Yamano Gakki decided to go with a different name for this expanded line of guitars, that were designed in the exact form of the most valuable and sought-after classic Gibson guitars. It was decided upon to use “Orville” as the new brand name, dedicating the brand to the founding father. As it was decided that some of these guitars would be equipped with Japanese-made pickups and some with USA-made pickups, they decided to include the post-script “by Gibson” for the models that had pickups of American origin.

Other than the difference in headstock logo and pickups, there are no other hidden or outward differences that I am aware of. Many collector friends have said that they think the Orville by Gibsons are overall better guitars and while this may be so, many collectors have disagreed with this notion. There were many high-end and mid-range models of these guitars under both logos; I think mainly that the model number and original price dictated quality, not particularly the logo.

GIBSON SERIALIZATION. Identifying Gibson instruments by serial number is tricky at best and downright impossible in some cases. The best methods of identifying them is by using a combination of the serial number, the factory order.

Guitar Gopher is a guitarist and bassist with over 30 years of experience as a musician. These are some of the most respected brands in the world, and they not only make high-end guitars for professionals, but moderately priced models for us working folks. The point of this article is to help you figure out which acoustic-electric guitar is best of you, your budget and your needs.

All I can do is offer recommendations, but after three decades of playing I have a pretty good idea of what’s worth it, and what you ought to stay away from. There are a lot of guitars in this price range, and it can be tough sorting through them all. Really, you have two issues to consider: You want a great acoustic guitar that sounds outstanding on its own.

The Custom is the guitar he is generally associated with. Gibson has also produced two Billie Joe Armstrong Signature Les Paul Junior models one double cutaway, and one single cutaway as well as a very limited run of signature acoustic guitars. Since his death, Gibson has discontinued all Chet Atkins models and Gretsch has resumed the manufacturing and distribution of the Chet Atkins line.

Beck’s fascination with the guitar sprang as much from his interest in Les Paul , the man, as from his love of the guitar itself. Beck told an interviewer: The guitar was given to him in by Peter Green.

Like the GR, there are three versions of the G and G guitars, distinguished by changes to the PC board. I was contacted by a G player in the States and a G player in Norway both using the first run, early “prerelease” version of the guitar electronics.

The ES was introduced in Gibson hired Ted McCarty in , who became President in He led an expansion of the guitar line with new guitars such as the “Les Paul” guitar introduced in and designed by Les Paul , a popular musician in the s and also a pioneer in music technology. Later, a shorter neck was added. Similar in size to the hollow-body Thinlines, the ES family had a solid center, giving the string tone a longer sustain.

In the s, Gibson also produced the Tune-o-matic bridge system and its version of the humbucking pickup, the PAF “Patent Applied For” , first released in and still sought after for its sound. These “modernistic” guitars did not sell initially. It was only in the late s and early 70s when the two guitars were reintroduced to the market that they sold well.

The Firebird , in the early 60s, was a reprise of the modernistic idea, though less extreme.

Have a look at some vintage Epiphone guitar catalogues But perhaps the best known guitars built by Epiphone were those manufactured at the Gibson Kalamazoo plant – the CMI period. CMI bought out a struggling Epiphone in , buying tooling, parts, and even unfinished instruments. Production of hollow-bodied jazz guitars and acoustic upright basses began immediately. But before long Epiphone was producing new lines, unrelated to the output of previous years.

Thinline semi acoustics like the Epiphone Casino , Sorrento , Riviera and Sheraton were soon joined by solid bodies like the Epiphone Wilshire , Crestwood and Coronet ; all distributed to dealers that wanted Gibson-quality instruments, but did not qualify to be Gibson stockists themselves.

Epiphone makes some excellent affordable guitars for intermediate players, and the EJCE is no exception. This is a guitar with a legacy dating back over seven decades, with a classic look and sound.

Go to menu top I never heard anything better than a Fender if we’re talking about the big manufacturers. Later on, in the Guitar section, I’ll also talk about Standel and EchoSonic , but they’re produced in such small numbers that it’s fair to say they’ll only have historic interest to the most of us So As long as you get a tube Fender you’ll probably be on the right track, because they all sound pretty good. It doesn’t have to be vintage at all, but they do look pretty cool. Actually I started out playing a vintage Vox AC 30 and it wasn’t bad at all.

The sound was very ‘tube’ and that’s what you’re looking for, but Fender is still the better choice for Rockabilly. Fender Bassman ’59 reissue Many Rockabilly guitarists play a ’59 Fender Bassman or similar – vintage or reissue. It sounds perfect for rockabilly.

Its futuristic-looking, offset profile has continued to have a strong pull on guitarists, perhaps most notably, the late, great Johnny Winter. The Firebird Studio T addresses the important stuff first and foremost. Gibson has switched out the traditional mini-humbuckers for the new, full-throated sound of R and T humbuckers. Fretwork is exemplary and invites note benders to dig in with massive bends.

Gibson Serial Numbers General Gibson serial number information Gibson serial numbers are usually on the back of the guitars headstock; either stamped, inked or as a decal. The device allows musicians to bend the pitch of notes or entire chords with their pick hand for various effects. The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The Bigsby vibrato unit is installed on the top of the guitar and works in conjunction with a rocker bridge.
